  • Pennsylvania Tornado Outbreak

    On May 31st, 1985, a devastating and deadly tornado outbreak struck the Northeastern United States and Canada. 43 tornadoes and numerous damaging thunderstorms tore across Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario. This event was the deadliest tornado outbreak of the 1980's; killing 89 people in total, injuring more than 1,000 others, and racking up more than $600 million in property damage. In fact, since May 31, 1985, only two tornado days have been deadlier in the entire United States.
  • Great Yellowstone Fire

    These fires were historical for several reasons: first, they burned over 30 percent of the total acreage of the park, and second they marked a significant shift in the way Yellowstone fought fires.
  • Hurricane Katrina

    Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. When the storm made landfall, it had a Category 3 rating on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale–it brought sustained winds of 100–140 miles per hour–and stretched some 400 miles across. The storm itself did a great deal of damage, but its aftermath was catastrophic.
  • Hurricane Ike

    Over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Ike grew in size and intensified to a category two hurricane with maximum winds of 100 mph by that evening. Ike continued to move northwest toward the Texas coast as the hurricane crossed the central and northwest Gulf of Mexico.. Ike made landfall at 2:10 am CDT Saturday, September 13th near Galveston, Texas.
  • "superstorm" Sandy

    Hurricane Sandy, as a hurricane, is directly responsible for at least 147 deaths in the Northeast United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, according to the National Hurricane Center. The death toll in the United States directly attributed to Sandy includes 48 in New York, 12 in New Jersey, 5 in Connecticut, 2 in Pennsylvania, and five in other states. In the Caribbean, Haiti (54 deaths) and Cuba (11 deaths) are the countries affected the most, and there is one death in Canada.
  • Pennsylvania Ice storm

    Tuesday's ice storm was so devastating to Southeastern Pennsylvania that Peco set an outage record for any winter storm. As of midday Friday, the cumulative total had grown to about 715,000 homes and businesses that lost power at some point. For all seasons, only Superstorm Sandy, which hit in late October 2012, knocked more customers off the grid.
  • Winter Storm Desmond

    David Cameron said the flood defences in Cumbria "were not enough" and some people might not be home for Christmas.
    Storm Desmond lashed parts of Northern Ireland, north Wales, southern Scotland and especially north-west England over the weekend, and more heavy rain is expected this week.
    Record-breaking amounts of rain fell in Cumbria, the worst-hit county - prompting the county to declare a major incident.
  • New Jersey Wildfire

    A large wildfire that broke out Sunday morning in the New Jersey Pinelands burned more than 350 acres of trees and brush near the border of Burlington and Ocean counties, a fire official said.
    Although the blaze was 80 percent contained as of 9 a.m. on Monday
    So far, the fire has affected 356 acres. Some of those wooded acres have been lightly scorched by the flames, and some have been completely destroyed
  • Yellowstone Wildfire

    A wildfire has forced the evacuation and closure of a small campground in northeast Yellowstone National Park, the first visitor facility in the park to be affected by wildfires this summer.
  • Buette Wildfire

    The fire grew from a mere 30 acres to 400 acres in a matter of hours.The blaze has been dubbed the “Saddle Fire” due to a nearby road’s name. The Saddle Fire has forced evacuations from residents nearby.
