10 Events that led to the Civil War

  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
    Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin made separating the cotton from the seeds faster. This caused cotton to become the number one cash crop making slavery necessary in the South. The Cotton Gin lead to the Civil War because it's what caused the huge demand for slavery.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    When the Louisiana purchase land was added the question was if slavery was going to be allowed. This led to Civil War because now we had new land that was wanted to be free and slave. Meaning the North and the South were going to fight to get what they want.
  • Virgina and Kentucky Resolution

    Virgina and Kentucky Resolution
    Jefferson and Madison's resolutions let the states question federal government. This led to the Civil War because it helped support the Southerners.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise kept North and South balanced. This compromise lead to the Civil War because it forever closed the idea of slavery being allowed in 36'30' until the Kansas Nebraska act. The South was now restricted causing anger and hate to spread through the South.

    When California was added as a free state it through off the balance in the Senate. This led to the Civil War because now the North had more power over the South in the Senate.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stowe's book showed the real harshness of slavery between its master and slave. This little lady helped led to the Civil War because it opened peoples eyes to the brutality of slavery helping widen the gap between people who are against slavery and people who wanted slavery. When people read abouth the brutal treatment you now had
    people who were in the middle on one side or the other.

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas was the first bloodshed before the war. It's when North and South finally started killing over the idea of slavery spreading. It eventually led to the Civil War because it showed how extreme each side was going to go to protect there view on slavery. Even though it was fighting there own fellow Americans. It showed how divided the country really was.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    Douglases Kansas Nebraska act throught out the Compromise of 1820. It was going to allow slavery North of 36'30'. This led to the Civil WAr because it was allowing slavery to spread to places that were already said that there would be no slavery. This widened the gap between North and South because now there will be one more slave state.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Chief Justice Tanney let it be known that slave were property and could be taken wherever the master wanted and still be slaves. Thi was according to the fifth amendment. This case led to the Civil War because now slavery was allowed to be free states because slaves were just property.
  • Lincoln Election

    When Lincoln was elected the South knew that slavery wasn't going to be able to spread and since South Carolina had already seceded the South saw their way out of the union. This led to the Civil War because it now divided the country, the South was on there way to making the Confederacy
