Zlata is exited to go back to school after summer. She is going into the fifth grade and is happy to see her friends again.

Zlata and her family were supposed to go Jahorina ( the most beautiful mountain in the world) for the weekend but instead she found out that her father had to leave. She came home to her mother in tears and her father in a uniform.

Zlatas father returns. He will be on duty from now on every two days for ten hours at a time.

Zlata realizes that there is a real war going on close by. The people are in shelters, they have no electricity, no water, and there phones are not working. Her and her family are especially worried about there friend who lives there.

Her parents learn there friend is still alive. The T.V shows pictures of starving people. They want to send there friend a package. Zlatas dad is still on duty and she wonders when it will stop

They get to go to the mountain and have fun. Her father is off duty.

She sees all the pictures of the destruction and is worried about the people who live there. She also wanders why it is happening.

Sarajevo launches appeal on T.V to help the children of Dubrovnik. They make a package of sweets, chocolates, books, pencils, vitamins, and a doll to send. Zlata hopes it will make whoever gets it happy and hopes the war will end soon.

They get to talk to there friend in Dubrovnik on the phone on Christmas. Zlata has hope that things will get better soon.

Zlata finds it weird that her parents have no plans for a party on new years eve. She wonders if it is because of the war.

She saw ( heard) a small group of armed civilians kill a Serbian wedding guest and wound the priest on T.V. a day later there were baraccades everywhere. There were attacks in the parliment building.

Zlata writes that things are back to normal in Sarajevo

No more trouble in Sarajevo but all around them. Zlata is not aloud to watch T.V when the news is on anymore

People are shown leaving Sarajevo on T.V. Airports, Train, and bus stations are packed. Zlatas Parents are in the kitchen and her mother is crying.

Shooting started around noon and they had to go and hide in a corner in the cellar. Zlata writes about the pounding noise, the shots,the thundering sounds, and the glass breaking overhead coming from her street.
