    Proved to be be very effective in combat, which soldiers relied on. Originating from the gatling gun, the vickers gun produced by the British proved to be a valuable weapon. This proved to a great addition to both sides.
  • Archduke Assasination

    This event is what sparks WW1. Because of the Alliances, between nations, this event causes a war between the Allies and the Central Powers.
  • The Lusitania

    The Lusitania
    German U-Boats attack and sinks the Lusitania. 1,198 people died in this attack, 128 of them are Americans. This event sparks the way for the U.S. to get involved in WW1
  • Tanks

    Tanks
    Tanks didn't go into battle until the Somme offensive. They proved to be ineffective during battle, killing it's occupants more than the enemy. The potential was recognized, so the Tank Corps was estabilished.

    It wasn't very effective during combat. Although, it proved to be great at physcological warfare. It only accounted for a small percent of the small total deaths.

    The British give the president a telegram that originated from Germany, that says if the U.S. gets involved then Mexico should help them. The reward for Mexico was the American Southwest. Mexico declined this offer, but this changed the american public opinion to go to war.

    Congress authorizes a decleration of war against Germany. The U.S. enters the war on the side of Britain, France, and Russia. The U.S. changes the tide of the war.

    Proved to be a better field bandage. It was more absorbent, cheaper, and plentiful. It freed nurses of using the reusable rag.

    They were used for reconissance, bombing, and air superiority. They were equipped with bombs and machine guns. This proved to be very successful in tactical air support
  • Enlistment

    Albert J. Carpenter enlisted at the age of 19 into the 36th Division of the 142nd infantry. There were 8,500 men drafted with him, from Oklahoma and Texas. Arrived in France by ship.

    There was heavy artillery all night. The Marines have broken through the line. He's been running low on ammunition for a while.

    It's very muddy and it's been raing all day. Just went over the top for an attack, but it was unsuccessful. The German counter attack was also unsuccessful.

    A gas shell went into his trench and he didn't get his mask on in time, so he was sent to the field hospital. He took 20 pills and was sent back to the front. After coming back from the field hospital his lungs are still soar and he's still throwing up blood.

    He has finally recieved a hot meal instead of finding scraps of food on the front. He was able to take a bath, clean his clothes, and have a bed. He's fully rested after all that fighting on the front.

    He wrote plenty of letters to his mother. He wrote about his experiences and how he felt at that time. It was hard to communicate at the time because of all the fighting and the mailing was slow.

    An armistice was signed to end the war on the western front. It was declared to end all hostilities on the western front. It was changed to Veteran's Day in 1954.
