    Matilda’s father built the coffeehouse when Matilda was about four, and Matila's father died crudely two months after the coffee house/company opened. The coffee house was just off the corner of Seventh and High Streets. In the beginning they hardly gotten any customers, but soon, business jogged after G. Washington’s new house was built just about two blocks away from the coffee shop.

    Mother gets sick with the Yellow Fever
    Matilda and her grandfather were walking home, until they see a man dump a somewhat looked like a dead body at the family coffeehouse door. The body was actually Matilda's mother, and the mother is still alive sick and I'll. Matilda and her grandfather carry the mother into the bedroom and call a doctor who tells them that she does not have the fever. They baits her and let her rest every four hours hoping that would cure her.

    After Matilda's mother gets ill, Matilda and her grandfather take a wagon with a woman, a man, and an young infant to the somewhat country to stay with a friend of Matilda's mother’s. When trying to pass the sectional border to another city, they are stopped to be checked for the fever. The doctor at the place said that Matilda's Grandfather has the fever. The woman infant, and man get tossed out of the wagon.

    Matilda somehow wakes up in a hospital with many other people with the fever. Matilda's nurse, Mrs. Flagg, helps her recover and getting strong by making sure Matilda is fed and given nutrition. while Matilda is still in the hospital, her Grandfather goes back to the house and finds Matilda's mother and then finds the house locked. Matilda and her grandfather assume she has gone to find them at the Ludingtons.

    Matilda, this is Nell
    After Matilda's grandfather was buried, Matilda walked around a somewhat deserted town looking for anybody she, or her mother, knew. During this walk, Matilda found a china doll with a laying outside a front house open door. Matilda then sees a young female child crying on the ground. The child, Nell, said to Mattie that her mother was somewhat “broken.”

    With Nell in Matilda's responsibility, Matilda walks more looking and or hoping to see anyone she knew. After a while later, Matilda finds the old cook at the family coffee shop, Eliza. Eliza takes Mattie and Nell back to her home and feeds them. Matilda then meets Mother Smith who cooks and takes care of the children, William and Robert, while Joseph gets better, and Eliza works.

    Matilda and Eliza walk on the icy cold frost on the ground in the garden to try and make the fever go away. Matilda and Eliza work together to walk out in the cold to get rid of the germs.

    Before Matilda was about to leave her home, she received a interesting painting from Nathaniel Benson. Their was a ransom note on the painting, and it told Matilda that he would be staying locked up with the Peale family until the fever had long gone away. Matilda doses see Nathaniel after that. The morning that the Penile Colony opens up Matilda saw him. They talked and talked and became friends again.

    Eliza suggests a Thanksgiving dinner to celebrate hopefully the end of the fever. they invite Joseph and his sons along with Mother Smith, and Nathaniel and Nell. At dinner Matilda said she will be reopening the family coffee shop, and she asked Eliza to be her business partner.
