The Midway Islands were officially claimed by Captain N.C. Brooks for the United States. It was formally annexed by the United States 8 years later. They rarely paid attention to the island many years after this.

President Theodore Roosevelt put the U.S. Navy under control of Midway. It became a connecting point for a submarine cable that was being built between the Philippines and Hawaii. It later on became a regulated stopover point for transpacific flights.

A submarine and air base began to be built here on Midway Islands. They were preparing for war. The Navy began funding the project in 1939, while Albert Kahn prepared his plans for the buildings. It was completed in August 1941.

About 12 hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, two Japanese destroyer ships began bombing Sand Island. They were able to be held off by the U.S. Navy and were forced to retreat. George Cannon would be the first ever U.S. marine to win a Medal of Honor for his actions that day.

Japanese carriers and planes began the attack on Midway. Their attack lasted almost a half an hour and caused a lot of damage to the structures. The Japanese also lost fewer than 10 planes on their attack. This went on for 2 more days and the losses by Japan at Midway were catastrophic. They lost 4 carriers, a heavy cruiser, and more than 320 planes with about 3,000 Japanese soldiers killed. While the United States victory costed them a carrier and a destroyer with 317 killed.
