The Czech part of Czechoslovakia was subsequently invaded by Germany in March 1939. Germany wanted to expand its territory to include the Sudetenland and gain control of key military defences in the area.Because of its German majority, the Sudetenland later became a major source of contention between Germany and Czechoslovakia.

The Laboratory began in 1943 for a single purpose: to design and build an atomic bomb. It took just 27 months. On July 16, 1945, the world's first atomic bomb was detonated 200 miles south of Los Alamos at Trinity Site. This test proved that scientists at the Laboratory had successfully weaponized the atom. The Big Three met in Potsdam, Germany, to negotiate terms for the end of World War II. After the Yalta Conference they had agreed to meet to determine the postwar borders in Europe. the United States becomes the first and only nation to use atomic weaponry during wartime when it drops an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
