WWII Timeline

  • Bataan Death March

    United States troops were foced to go through the jungles of the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines after surrendering to the Japanese. Thousands of these soldiers died during the stride due to abuse and hunger.
  • Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill meet up in USS Augusta for a secret conference in Newfoundland, Canada.

    Britain and the United States discussed post-war issues. They assumed that the Allies were going to win the war no matter what.
  • Bombing of Pearl Harbor- Begins US invovlement in WWII

    Pearl Harbor in Hawaii is bombed by Japan. This foced the United States to declare war on Japan. The US was now officially part of the World War.
  • Japanese attack several locations

    Wake Island and Guam, which are held by America, British-held Hong Kong, SIngapore, Borneo, Burma, and Indonesia are attacked by the Japanese.
  • Allies stopped the Japanese taking control of Port Moresby, New Guinea

    he Japanese had hoped to capture Port Moresby as well as part of the Solomon Islands. This would give them control of the Coral Sea, and allow them to strike at Australia. The Japanes were not victorious in capturing these places as the Allies prevented it from occuring.
  • Battle of Midway

    The Japanese begin with an air raid. The American forces were prepared for an attack so they fought off the bombers. Japan's naval forces were destroyed by the US, leaving the US with a great victory over Japan.
  • Allied troops came to North Africa

    When the Allied troops landed in North Africa, they chased the German Afrika Corps, which was led by Erwin Rommel.
  • The German Army surrenders

    Germany controlled Stalingrad. The Soviet Union surround the Germans in Stalingrad during the Russian winter. They eventually surrendered.
  • Operation Mincemeat

    The Allies deception (considered one of the most sucessful wartime deceptions in history) to convince the German that they were going to invade Greece instead of Sicily. The Allies used a dead body from a London coroner carrying fallse inforamtion on its person. The Germans fell for the information.
  • Battle of the Philippine Sea

    The Allies fought the Japanese in this war. It was the largest battle involving aircraft to be fought. The Japanese attempted to attack US forces with airplanes but during the process lost some 300 planes and three aircrafts.
  • D-Day

    D-Day began with the attack of Germans by air and sea. The Allies used eleven divisions of combat soldiers. These troops landed on five different beaches, hoping to move inland.
  • Allies invade Okinawa

    The Japanese initially left, but then they attacked back.. Using the island's caves and tunnels, they attacked without warning. The fight killed more than 12,000 Americans. The Japanese lost 110,000 men in the fight. The Allies took control of Okinawa in June 1945 in the bloodiest battle of the war in the Pacific.
