  • White Primary

    White primaries are elections where only whites could vote. These began in the late 1800's. Established by Democratics in the south. Began as a part of the Jim Crow Laws. Used to disenfranchise minority voters.
  • Benjamin Mays

    Mentor for MLK Jr. He was the President of Morehouse College. Also was a preacher and a civil rights activist. He oversaw Atlanta school desegregation.
  • 1946 election

    This election took place in 1946. Eugene talmadge was elected, but he died before taking office. This began the three governors controversy. The TGC was between Herman Talmdage, Ellis Arnall, and Melvin Thompson. Thomspon ended up holding office for that term.
  • Brown v. Board

    Supreme court ruling that decided segregated schools to be unconstitutional. This overuled Plessy vs. Ferguson. Segregated schools violated ammendment 14.
  • State Flag 1956

    Began when Herman Talmadge was in office. He was racist. John Bell introduced this idea. When Brown v. Board ended, it sparked the anger of many southern politicians. This led to the new state flag that was 2/3 confederate battle flag.
  • MLK Jr.

    Famous for his "I have a dream" speech. Was a minister. President of SCLC. Most prominent African American Civil Rights Leader. Taught by Benjamin Mas at Morehoues College.
  • SNCC

    Often pronounced "snick". This began in the 60's. Organized the Albany Movement. Emerged from student-led sit ins to protest segretgated lunch.
  • Sibley Commission

    This group was assigned to when the Governor was faced with a decision as to desegregate schools or closing them. The Sibley Commission was led by Sibley. It was to decide, based on public survey, whether or not to close schools. It resulted in schools "desegregating".
  • Hamilton Holmes

    One of the first African Americans adimitted to UGA. He was Valedictorian of Henry McNeal Turner High School. Later went to Emory University School of Medicine.
  • Charlayne Hunter

    One of the first African Americans admitted into UGA. Later worked as a reporter for the New Yorker.
  • Albany Movement

    Resulted in 500 protesters in jail. Its goal was to desegregate Albany. MLK was drawn in when he and others were arrested. He later admitted it was a fail.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    An act signed by Lyndon B. Johnson. It outlawed discrimination based on gender, race, color, religion, or native origin. It ended racial segregation in public accomadations.
  • Lester Maddox

    Lester Maddox was a 1966 segregationist who was elected governor. He was selected by the Democratic GA Government because no party received a majority of the votes. Had no real organization or power which allowed for more power in the legislature. 1970 was lieutenant Governor under Jimmy Carter.
  • Andrew Young

    Andrew Young was an aide to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ga's first black representative to the House of Representatives since Reconstruction. US Ambassador to the United Nations. Succeeded Jackson as mayor. Brought the Democratic Convention to Georgia and the 1996 Olympics to Atlanta.
  • Maynard Jackson

    First African American Mayor of Atlanta. Fought to make sure that minority businesses received their fair share of city contracts. Started MARTA, expanded Hartsfield Airport and helped bring Olympics to ATL.
