    U boats were a type of submarine the Germans used during WW2, the name being a shortened version of “Unterseeboot.” The Higgens boats were also a boat that really came into play during the second war, though they had been around for a while and were adapted for armies by Andrew Jackson Higgens. These boats were originally called LCVP, “The Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel.”

  • Winston Churchill Becomes Prime Minister

    After the German invasion of France (and their retreat across the English Channel), the people of Britain decided to retire their current Minister, Nevile Chamberlain, and in his place "elected" Churchill. The new Minister (and the Royal Family) were great leaders during this time, and "showed courage" by staying in London despite the air strikes from the Germans. This was known as the "Battle of Britain."

About 76,000 prisoners including 12,000 Americans were forced on the 60 mile march under a blazing sun without food or water toward a new POW camp in the Philippines. Over 5,000 Americans died on the march which began April 10, 1942, and lasted six days for some and up to twelve days for others."

Eight months after Bush became president, the September 11 attacks occurred. He signed the Patriot Act and started the War On Terror.

During the early part of Clinton’s first term, he put in place a tax code which would increase taxes on the rich and decrease taxes on the poor. The decade ended with the being the first time the United States did not have to borrow money to pay for its budget. Clinton left office with high approval ratings and was succeeded by George W. Bush."

    In short, brown versus the board of the education of Topeka was a famous legal battle to allow black children to go to school with white kids. before this they had to be separated. basically, stupid and warped ideals and customs had to be demolished so that children could be educated together. a member of this group, Thurgood Marshall, was also the first lawyer for the NAACP.

    yet another war based on communism. against north Vietnam (supported by china and soviet union), and south Vietnam (helped by the US). the USA eventually lost the war.

    at the start of the 1960s, another famous peaceful protest where the sit ins, where black students would go into restaurants, sit at the counters which were only for white people, and ask to be served- if they agreed to serve them they would move on to the next building, but if they refused they would remain seated at the counter until they were served or forcefully removed.

    built to divide Germany after ww2, stopped people from escaping communist east Germany. between 1949 - 1959 over 2 million people left for democratic west Germany. escapees were to be shot on sight
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    May 4th, 1961, a racially mixed group of people set off on a bus trip to new Orleans- except they sat in seats they weren't "supposed to." some white people would sit in the blacks only section, and the black people would sit in the white people only section. it was one of the most well known peaceful protest of the time, although the riders would often be hurt and jailed.

    the 44th president of the United States (2009 - 2017) and first african american man (and person) to ever be president. his main goal as president was to have affordable healthcare for everyone, and became the Affordable Care Act (ACA). "By the end of 2011, Obama had withdrawn all combat troops from Iraq. The rise of another terrorist group in the region, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), continued the war against terrorism throughout Obama’s presidency." natgeokids
