World War 2 Timeline

  • Japanese Invasion of Manchuria

    In 1931, the Japanese Kwangtung Army attacked Chinese troops in Manchuria in an event commonly known as the Manchurian Incident. This was an attempt by the Japanese Empire to gain control over the whole province, in order to eventually encompass all of East Asia. This proved to be one of the causes of World War II.
  • Hitler Made Chancellor of Germany

    Adolf Hitler was appointed as the chancellor of Germany by President Paul Von Hindenburg. This is an important event because Hitler changes Germany into a dictatorship and starts World War 2, as well as causing the holocaust.
  • The Anschluss

    The Anschluss is German for "connection" or union, political annexation. Austria and Germany united as one country, and the rise of a Nazi party within Austria in the mid-1930s paved the way for Hitler to make his move.
  • German invasion of Poland

    On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the invasion. Germany resented the fact poland received the former German provinces of West Prussia, Poznan, and Upper Silesia under the Treaty of Versailles after World War I, and Germany planned on getting it back. This invasion was the start of World War 2.
  • Battle of Dunkirk

    the Battle of Dunkirk was the defence and evacuation of British and allied forces in Europe. Germany had surrounded France, but England saved the British Army in France. This was an important battle because without the evacuation of the remaining British army, the allied forces would have probably lost the war, but this evacuation bought them some time.
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Japan had bombed the naval base at pearl harbor on December 7th. This was a surprise attack to hinder America from joining the war. America had put embargos on Japan, and Japan was failing in resources, so the attack was to buy them time so they could conquer more of China and by the time America came back Japan could stand a chance. This event is important because this event caused America to join World War 2.
  • Bataan Death March

    The Bataan Death March was the forced march of American and Filipino prisoners from one side of the island to the other. The 63 mile march began with 72,000, and by the end of the march 7,000 to 10,000 prisoners died.
  • Battle of Midway

    Six months after pearl harbor, the United states defeated Japan in the naval battle. This was an importnat turning point in the Pacific campaign, and allowed the Allies to move into an offensive position.
  • D-Day

    During World War II (1939-1945), the Battle of Normandy resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. Some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history. This event is important because the Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe.
  • The Battle of the Bulge

    The Battle of the Bulge was a major German offensive campaign. The surprise attack caught the Allied forces off guard and became the battle with the most american casualities, whose forces bore the brunt of the attack, during all of World War II. It also severely depleted Germany's war-making resources. This is an important event because it was the biggest battle of the war.
  • Yalta Conference

    At Yalta, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin made important decisions regarding the future progress of the war and the postwar world. The goals of the conference were;
    1. Unconditional surrender of the Axis powers
    2. Democracies instead of a Dictatorship within the Axis powers
    3. Setting up of the United Nations
    This event is important because it negiotiated the end of the war.
  • V E Day

    Victory In Europe Day officially announced the end of World War Two in Europe.
  • Bombing of Hiroshima

    The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States during the final stages of World War II in 1945. This event is important because this bombing in Japan brings about the conclusion of the war in Japan.
  • V J Day

    V J Day
    V J Day is Victory in Japan Day. On August 14, 1945, it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War 2.
