  • When Australia went to Word War 2

    On 3 September 1939, Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies announced that Australia was at war with Germany.
    After Great Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939, Australia raised a volunteer force, the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF), and sent the 6th, 7th and 9th Divisions of the AIF overseas to support Britain.

    General Bergonzoli surrenders the Italian XXIII Corps at Bardia to the Australians. 45,000 Italian prisoners and 130 tanks are captured by the Australians for just 500 casualties.

    The Japanese military leaders planned an attack on the United States Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. The attack force of 6 aircraft carriers and 24 warships sailed under strict radio silence. By 7 Deecember they had sailed undetected to whithin 400 km of Pearl Harbor and launched its attacked at dawn. 7 US Battleships were sunk or damaged and over 2400 men were killed.

    In the same week as Pearl Harbor, Japanese bombed Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philipines and a Japanese army landed in northern Malaya and shouthern Thailand. On 10 December sank the British battleship Prince of Wales and the battle cruiser Repulse off the coast of Malaya . On 25 December, Hong Kong fell and the Japanese marched down the Malay peninsula to the vital british base on the island fortress of Singapore.

    The British commander of Singapore, General Percival, surrendered. It was the largest surrender in British history, with 130 000 Allied soldiers, including 15 000 Australians, surrending to the Japanese.

    The Japanese launched 54 land based bombers and around 188 aircraft.The attack ceased after about 40 minutes. The second attack, which began an hour later, involved high altitude bombing of the Royal Australian Air Force base at Parap.The air attacks on Darwin continued until November 1943, by which time the Japanese had bombed Darwin 64 times.

    small force of soldires were sent up to Kokoda Track to protect the airfield in Kokoda. Japanese landed at Gona and headed for the small settlement of Kokoda. In August, the Hapanese attacked the Australians at Isurava and Aola. Australians were ordered to withdraw to Imita Ridge. By September, the Japanese was facing exauhation, with little food left and illness. The Japanese began an slow withdrawal and Australia begant to take advance. By November, the Australian flag flew at Kokoda.

    VJ Days Japan Surrenders
    On 6 August a plane dropped and atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in Japan, two-thirds of the city was destroyed and 80 000 people were killed. On 9 August, a second bomb was launched and killed 40 000 people in Nagasaki. On 14 August, the Japanese emperor ordered his people to surrender.
