    Hundreds of European (mostly Eastern and Western) were migrating to the U.S. in greater numbers than ever before. Left to find better jobs and because of overpopulation in Europe. American Fever may have also played a role.

    The Balkans were well-known as the world's powder keg because they were easily incited into war, held important geological positions and had powerful alliances.

    Caused many anti-foreigner laws to appear and slowed immigration considerably. Many feared the spread of communism later on which made for more anti-immigrant sentiment and thus anti-immigrant laws.

    Many of the European powers had secret alliances that pushed more uninvolved countries to go to war to protect their buddy. They also used their allaince as an excuse to take more land (imperialism). Finally, nationalist sentiments made it even more of volatile war.

    Argument over the legality of the Espionage Act based on the 1st Amendment Rights provided by the Constitution. Charles Schenck was against the war and spoke out against it but was accused of being a traitor under the Espionage Act. He was ruled guilty.
  • Big Four Meets

    Great Britain, France, U.S. and Italy met in Paris for the peace talks and were considered the big four of the world since they were the most powerful (economically and militarily).
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Big Four met to discuss the spoils of war. Most of the Europeans were out for vengeance and more territory. Wilson led the talks with the idea of a League of Nation and no tolerance for imperialism.
