    Clothing of the 1850s
    In the 1850s the women's clothing had big ruffles. In the daytime they wore jackets or bodices that buttoned down in the front. There dresses went over an undergarment so it could be visible under an open neck blouse or dress. The sleeves on the dresses were long, trimmed and degined with detail. Sometimes they wore collars and bows to tie the outfit togther. In the evening or nighttime they wore a crinoline (a steel cage) under there dresses to make them look bigger.

    In 1860 the dresses came in brighter colours, it was larger and they moved up the waistlines. In the daytime they wore the same kind of dresses as they did in the 1850s. Such as undergarment, long sleeves and highish, lowish necklines. At nighttime they wore short sleeve dresses that were made out of panels. They were also made with short necklines as it was in the 1850s. The newest addition in 1860 was the gloves they wore that went just past the wrist.

    In the early mid-1860s the low brim spoon came out. This bonnet is created with a wired cloth frame, covered in slik and decorated with ribbons, flowers, slik, fabric and other things that is available. The bonnet comes in many colors and is lined with opened weave cotton. The bonnet also has a large ribbon at the end to tie in a bow, so it could stay in place on your head.

    In the 1870s the women's dresses were longer in the back and shorter in the front. The women tended to wear a skirt under a skirt to make their waist look smaller (called a under skirt). The women's sleeves were big and flared around the wrist. The dresses were short sleeves with tight flower ribbions (chocker's) aroud there necks. The chocker's became one of the most popular neckleces in 1870.

    During the 1880s the women wore two main kinds of dresses. One of the dresses was very similar to the ones in the 1870s. Longer in the back and shorter in the front with an underskirt. The other kind of dress was a slim skirt with long selves and a low neckline.

    In 1890 the women's dresses became more tighter and kept changing designs throughout the years. One dress type was called the A-Line. This dress had a dark shape and outline that can only be seen in a lighter view with big puffy sleves that go thin around the wrist. The second kind of dress was called Trumpet Skirt. These skirts are tight around the hips and loose around or
    past the knees. These skirts were also puffy and thin around the wrist.

    In 1894 the Tailor-Made Suit came out. Tailors (outfiter) started thinking about ladies clothing and what new design they could come up with. The tailor suit was a plain jacket with sleeves that was perfectly fitted above the waist. They were great for women that were handling a business in or near town.
