    Fashion and Entertainment:  Teen Fashions
    Girls wore poodle skirts, sweater sets, bobby sox, and saddle shoes. Boys wore baggy pants, v-necked sweaters, loafers, or white "bucks". Many teens wore white t-shirts, motor cycle jackets, black leotards, bermuda shorts, pedal pushers, ballerina flats, full skirts with petticoats, and strapless evening gowns.

    Science and technology:  Silliy putty introduced
    Silly putty was introduced in the 1950's in the toy fair in New York City. In 1957 the first televised comerical for silly putty was aired. The comerical sold 4,500 tons of silly putty.

    Fashion and Entertainment:  American Modern Furniture Comes into Homes
    This style often used synthetic materials and technology developed during World War 2. Furniture used clean, simple designs, and had straight lines, simple curves, and few ornaments. Technology also influenced furniture like a TV table was made so people could eat and watch TV at the same time.

    This war was fought between the United States and the Soviet Union and it did not have hand to hand fights like most wars did; it was fought with spies, secret actions, and trying to win over other countries leaders. People during this war learned to be on theier toes and be ready for nuclear bombs. None were every launched exept for pratice bombs.

    People thought that their spectacular cars showed how succuessful they were. Cars had lots of gleaming chrome, fancy grilles, bright, shiny paint, and soaring fins. Some cars could only travel a few miles on 1 gallon of gas and had to fill up often.

    Seperate but Equal was a law that said whites and blacks could be seperated if what they have is equal.The white people always ended up haveing more and better things than the blacks. Most people considered this law Seperaate but Unequal.

    Me during the 50s wore grey flannel suits and loafers. Women during the 50s wore dresses with pinched in waists and high heels.

    After the war most womens number one priority was to find a man who could provide for her and give her a family. The role for most women in the 50s was the home keeper. Women would stay home all the time and clean and take care of their children. In this time period most families could afford a middle- class life style.

    After World War Two there was a baby boom and the new and big families needed homes. Homes in the cities began to cost to much and they began to run out of room. So suburbs were created. Suburbs were town just outside of big cities. They had lower priced homes and most homes looked the same.

    This "Forgotten War" was part of the Cold War and was fought mainly between the United states and the South Koreans. This war was worked out with a truce instead of nuclear weapons. The treatyn was signed in 1953, when the war ended.

    Women during the 50s cut and curled thir hair, and they often slept in curlers. Women also wore their hair in ponytails, and some stars had their hair poodle cut. Men wore their hair ducktail and pompadour.

    Charles Mingus is one of the 1st black, original, and influencial jazz computers of the 20th centrey. He created 2-largest volume of jazz work after Duke Ellington . Also known for his unusual style of composing.

    Inited black and white musical styles. Combined elements of jazz, rythum, blues, country ,and western. Some saw it as a bad influence on young people but others saw it as lively, fun, and joyful.

    Northern cities like Chicago and detroit, musicians Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and alot more where those who played what was known as the Mississippi Delta Blues. Pioneers in a style of guitar music what combined jazz and he blues. Honk Ballard song "The Twist" was a very famous song to dance to, teenagers and adults doing it. The Cha-Cha is a famous Cuba dance.

    One of the most succesful singers and ballads in the American music world. At San Francisco's Black Hawk Club, Mathis attracted the co-worker. She was determind to make him a star and become his manager. Also became involved in films, singing the title song for the 1957 films "Lizzie." Johnny was being dissatified with his manager so he astablished his own company, Rojon Productions. Not only to become his one manager but promote new talent.

    Brazil was the only condiate to host the world cup in hte 1950's, although it was origanally planned to be held in 1949. One of the biggest shocks in World Cup histotory came on june 29th when England were beaten by USA. Sweeden and Spain also showed class and topped their groups. A world record of 200,000 spectators watched the game and could't believe the outcome.

    Charles M. Schulz made the very first one, and the very first strip was four panels that showed Charlie Brown walking with two other young children. The cartoon strip was orginally called Li'l Folks. Schulz inspired an entirely new genre in publishing without enen realizing it.

    Franis McNamara ame up with the idea of the credit card when he was out eating when his freind forgot his wallet and McNarmar thought of the credit card so you have money when ever you need it.

    He entered the Major Legue baseball orginizationsst the age of 20. Won the Rookie of the year award with 20 homeruns, 68 runs battled in RBI and great feilding. He also led the Giants to a World Championship.

    Liquid paper was invented by Bette Wesmith Graham. She thought of the idea when she was writing a paper and messed up. It was originally called "mistake out".

    I Love Lucy starred Lucille Ball and her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz. I Love Lucy was inspired by a popular radio program, My Favorite Husband, and was the first television show filmed in front of real people. I Love Lucy was also the first show to use real laughter insted of a "laugh track."

    The vaccine for polio was finally develeloped by Dr. Jonas Salk in 1952. After the vaccine was in use, polio cases dropped by 97 percent. The March of Dimes started as a way to raise money for polio vaccine reasearch.

    One of the Afircan American stars of perffessional football, whose super running for the 49ers in hte 1950's. Led him to the pro football Hall of Fame. He was amoung the most dominating and electrrfying runnners of his time. He led the National Football Leugue in 1953 to 1954.

    President Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th president of the United States and the first president to have his election shown on national telivision. Eisenhower was in office for two terms even while between the two he had heart problems. He was big on trying to stop communism. Most people thought he was a good president, but some thought he tookm to lang to end segragation.

    In Flint, Michigan on June 8, 1953 the deadliest tornado in Michigan history struch the nothern community of Beecher. It killed 116 people and injured 844.

    Jack Adel created a moxbox car so her daughter could take it to school in a matchbox. That is were they got the name Matchbox cars

    In 1953 an American biologist James Dewy Watson and British biologist Francis Crick developed a model of the structure of DNA. DNA is found in the nucleus of each cell and is responcible for the passing of genetic traits from parents to children.

    Television was becoming more popular so people in Hollywood made 3-D movies to bring back the movie buisnes. Moviegoers wore polarized cardboard glasses with one red lens and one green lens.

    Disneyland was opened by Walt Disney in Aneheim, California, and his father was the one who inspired him to do so. Construction began on July 21, 1954, and on July 17, 1955 6,000 invitation only guests were invited for a sneak preview of Disneyland, but 22,000other people showed up with fake tickets.

    Rosa Parks was an African- American seamstress who insprired many effective boycotts and did many amazing thing for African-American people. One of the greatest things Rosa Parks did was stand up to a white man on a public bus. This got her arrested but it also inspired many great things.

    In 1956 President Eisen hower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act, this gave permission to start the international highway system. This new system helped people to commute tom work and live in suburbs. It caused a large change within the United States.

    Ed Sullivan paid Elvis Presley $50,000 to be on 3 of his shows. Elvis said "This is probably the greatest honor that i've ever had in my life." Over 60 million people, both younger and old, watched the show and many people bieleved it helped bridge the generation gap for Elvis Prelsey acceptance into teh mainstream.

    In Little Rock Arkansas, nine African -American students tried to attend an all white school. the National Gaurd was called in to escort the kids to school because of the awful things the white students would have done. People tried to protest against the kids going to this school, but they still mwent and had a rough time.

    On April 2 presedent Eisenhower sent the draft legislation to congress establishing the "National Aeronantics and Space Angency". Thats were they got the name NASA from. NASA became the worlds premier agent for exploration carrying on in "the new ocean".

    In 1959 the Barbie doll was invented by Ruth Handler. The Barbie doll got her name from Ruth's daughter Barbara. The Barbie doll was introduced to the world at the Amerian toy fair in New York City.

    The track was called the big D, and the track is 2 and a half miles around. Bill France Jr. opened the Daytona track to help the town, and to spread his love for NASCAR. Lee Petty tok the checkered flag on the day of the first race.
