    Before becoming a General

    Sherman saw some combat during th Second Semiole War in Florida. He did not get to fight in the war though. He soon resigned his commission. He then wend to banking and law for a little while. After that he was superindentednt of Louisiana Military Academy. When the Civil War began he resigned form the academy and when north. Then became colonel of the 13th US infantry.

    Commanded a brigade of Tyler's Division in the Union. The army was defreated during the battle. President Lincoln liked what he saw in Sherman. He was impressed my his performance and promoted to brigadier general.
  • Attempt in keeping states form seceding

    Later on, he was sent to Kentucky where he had to keep the states form seceding. Sherman had views that the war would not end quickly. He then got replaced by Don Carlos Buell.

    During the battle of Shiloh, William Sherman commanded the division. Unfortunately he was defeated by the Confederate. He was then promoted to major general even with the defeat!

    Throughout the Civil War

    Sherman then led thousands of troops during battle. He led the battle of Chckasaw Bluffs, Arkansas Post and commanded XV Corps during the pampaign to capture Vicksburg. In the battle of Chattagooga Sherman was against Patrick Leurne, a Confederate gerenal in a contest at Missionary Ridge. When "Stonewall," was promoted commander of all the US armies, Sherman was then appointed to commander of all troops in the Western Theatre.

    • Do not know actual date* Sherman knew that to keep the Union and defeat the Southern armies he was to destroy the material and psychological will to wage war. He used modern warfare. He had three men, Geroge Henry Thomas, James B. McPherson and John M. Schofield to outwit and defeat Confederate troops. He was also taught by General Grant. He knew a thing or two and understood that they will do what ever it takes to win the war. Sherman knew what he was doing.

    Do not know the actual date William Sherman went under the command of John Bell Hood to harass the Confederate Army of Tennessee. In the meantime Sherman cut off all communcations to his army and set fourth his "March to the Sea." He destroyed all in sight with his sixty mile-wide path or hell through the middle of Gerorgia.

    Successful now, Sherman started looking towards the northern part and began marching through the Carolinas. He was chasing the Confederates under Joseph E. Johnston.     William Sherman kept on doing all sorts of things in the Civil War. He capture Columbia, and South Carolina on the 17th of February. He defeated the troops in North Carolina under Johnston during the Battle of Bentonville and then accepted surrender to him later on.

    Sherman stayed in the military and later on became full general as general-in-chief of the army from 1869 to 1883. He is known for "total warfare."
