William Golding was born September 19, 1911, in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. His mother, Mildred, was an active suffragette who fought for women’s right to vote. His father, Alex, worked as a schoolmaster.

William went on to Brasenose College at Oxford University. His major was Natural Sciences. He changed his major to English Literature.

In the autumn he became a teacher at Michael Hall, a Steiner school. He stayed in Streatham, South London, for two years.

He met Ann Brookfield in 1938 and they fell in
love. In September, they were married in
Maidstone Registry Office. -
In January he began sending the novel to publishers. Many rejected it. In September, Golding sent it to Faber and Faber. In
1954 it was published as Lord of the Flies -
Early on the morning of June 19, he died of heart failure. He was buried in the churchyard at Bowerchalke.
