    Ralph convinces the group to create a fire on the mountain to create smoke, which they believe will help alert passing ships to their presence and speed up their rescue. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies ch. 2)

    Ralph and Simon create shelters
    Ralph and Simon create huts on the beach. It’s here in the novel that you start to see people in the group that don’t help at all. This creates tension between Ralph and Jack. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies ch. 3)

    Jack and his group of hunters paint their faces and murder their first pig. Here in the novel, you can start to see savagery developing within their civilization.     Even though the sun is setting rapidly, Jack insists on going up the mountain because Ralph thinks it’s a bad idea. Jack wants to show the group that he will take action, even if it is the wrong thing to do, so that they will respect him more than they do Ralph. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies ch. 7)

    Jack calls an assembly asking for the impeachment of Ralph as leader. After no one agrees, he storms off but invites everyone to join him. This marks the separation of their group into two. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies ch. 8)

    Jack invited everyone, even Ralph and his group, to a feast. While there, he initiates a chanting circle with his hunters. This is the start of a mob situation, at the end of which they murder Simon as if he were a pig. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies ch. 9)

    Roger murders Piggy
    Ralph and Piggy go to the cliff to retrieve his glasses which were stolen, which leaves Piggy blind for the incident. After Ralph and Jack fight for a bit, Roger lets a boulder roll which hits Piggy, knocks him off the cliff and he is then seen on the ground below with his skull cracked open.   • Jack tries to murder Ralph

    Jack tries to murder Ralph
    Ralph is injured in his fight with Jack. He then escapes, and hides from the group. Jack sends his hunters to scour the island to find him, so that he can murder him. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies ch. 12)

    Jack’s group is just about to murder Ralph, when they are found by a naval officer. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies ch. 12)
