Even though his father wanted him to be a scientist, William became an English teacher and philosopher at Bishop Wordsworth's School.

William Golding joined the Royal Navy during WW2. He served as a destroyer and he helped sink the German battleship Bismark.

He wrote his novel, Lord of the Flies. This told the story of younger boys who were stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. The novel ended up winning The Nobel Prize in Literature.

When they got older, William and his wife moved into a house in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. He died from heart failure eight years later in the house.
