William Golding was born on September 19, 1911. His parents are Alex and Mildred Golding, He was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England.

William Golding attended Brasenose College sometime in 1930. He studied science for two years. He later switched to the literature program where he mostly studied fiction writing. He loved poetry as well.

In 1934, William Golding had his first work published. It was a poetry book called Poems. However, it did not have much success.

After college, William Golding worked as an actor, producer, and director in London. He also found a job as a social worker. He really got into theater and considered it one of his strongest influences in literature.

He entered the Royal Navy in 1940 to help fight World War ll. He worked with ships and submarines. Once the war ended in 1945, he went back to writing.

In 1954, William Golding finally had Lord of the Flies published. It was rejected by 21 publishers. Lord of the Flies was his most successful work.

After the war, he also went back to teaching at Bishop Wordsworth's School. However, he stopped teaching there in 1961.

On June 19, 1993, William Golding died of a heartattack in his hometown of Perranarworthal, Cornwall. In his last years, he lived quietly with his wife and children.
