William Golding's Life

    He was born on September 19, 1911 in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England.
  • Childhood

    He received his early education at the school his father ran, Marlborough Grammar School. When William was just 12 years old, he attempted, unsuccessfully, to write a novel. A frustrated child, he found an outlet in bullying his peers.
  • School Path

    After primary school, William went on to attend Brasenose College at Oxford University. His father wanted him to become a scientist, but William chose to study English literature instead.
  • First Work

    In 1934, a year before he graduated, William published his first book of poetry called Poems. The book was overlooked by all the critics.
  • Start of Career

    Golding started teaching english and philosophy in Salisbury.
  • A break from teaching

    He then joined the Royal Navy in 1940 and fought in World War II
  • Back to the Start

    Once the war was over, in 1945 he went back to teaching and writing.
  • His First Book

    In 1954, he published his first novel Lord of the Flies.
  • Life After Teaching

    In 1963, right after he retired from teaching, Peter Brook made a film about the critically acclaimed novel.

    In 1983, when he was 73, he was given his first award. He had won the Nobel Prize for Literature
