William Gerald Golding was born in Cornwall, England on September 19th, 1911. His mother, Midlred, supported the British suffragette movements. His father Alec, was a school teacher and advocate for rationalism.

William started going to Brasenose College at Oxford in 1930. He studied science and literature.

In 1934, William's poetry book called Poems was published. However, it was overlooked by many critics.

William graduated from Oxford in 1935 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in education. He then took a teaching position at Bishop Wordsworth school in Salisburg.

In 1940, William left his teaching position to go join the fight with the Royal Navy. He helped fight in World War 2 until 1945.

After the war was over, he went back to his job as a teacher.

William's well known novel, Lord of the Flies, was published. It was rejected 21 times.

At age 73, he was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize for literature.

In 1988, he was knighted by England's Queen Elizabeth the second.

William Golding died of a heart attack in Cornwall. He is survived by his wife and twoo kids, David and Judith.
