William Golding was born September 19, 1911 in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England, His mother, Mildred, and his father, Alex.

After primary school, William went on to attend Brasenose College at Oxford University. His father wanted him to become a scientist but he went on to study English Literature instead.

A year before he graduated, William published his first work, a book of poetry entitled Poems.

During 1935 to 1939 Golding worked as a writer,actor, and a producer, he was paying his bill by being a social worker. In 1939, he began teaaching English and philosophy in Salisbury at Bishop Wordsworth's School.
