William was born in Cornwall, England, to Mildred and Alec Golding. His father Alec was a school teacher and a rationalist alongside being anti-religious, so Golding was raised as such, with a heavy influence held over him by his father.

Golding began studying science at Brasenose college, Oxford, in 1930, to appease his father who believed that this would be the appropriate path for him.

During his Oxford years, Golding had a volume of poems published as part of Macmillans Contemporary Poets series. These poems are valuable as they emphasise his distrust of the rationalist view he was raised on by his father, as it mocks rationalists and their ideas.
