William Golding was born on September 19, 1911. He was born in the town of Newquay, United Kingdom. William's birth parents were Alec and Mildred Golding.

William went to Marlborough Grammar School in Wiltshire from 1921 - 1930. For college, Golding attended Brasenose College, in Oxford.

William grew up receiving education at the school his father ran. His mother, Mildred, fought for Women's right to vote. Golding's father, Alex, worked as a schoolmaster. William attempted to write his first novel in 1923, but it was unsuccessful.

Golding got engaged to Molly Evans sometime in the 1930's. They called off the engagement eventually. Later in 1938, he married a woman named Anne Brookfield. They had 2 kids, his son in 1940, David, and his daughter in 1945, Judith.

Golding started teaching English and philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury in 1935.
