William Golding was born on September 19,1911 in Cornwall, England. He was born in Saint Columb Minor of Cornwall.

William Golding attended Brasenose College at Oxford University. He began studying science, but switched to literature his third year of college.

Golding began teaching English and philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth's School. He taught boys with less discipline than he has ever experienced so was willing to join the navy.

Golding joined the Royal Navy and discovred his love for sailing and the sea. He fought battleships in World War II.

Golding published his first novel "Lord of the Flies" after he went back to teaching after World War II. His inspiration was his experience wih the "unruly" schoolboys.

In 1983, Golding was awarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was awarded after a film based on his novel was produced.

On June 19, 1993 he passed away in Cornwall, England. He died from a heart attack.
