William Golding was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall,England September 19, 1911. He was raised next door to a graveyard in the 14th century. Mildred, his mother was an active suffragette. HIs dad, Alex, worked as a school master.

In 1934, Golding published his work, a book of poetry. It was simply called "Poems" It was largely overlooked by critics.

William gradutated Oxford in 1935 and took a postion teaching English and pilosophy at Bishop Wordsworth's School.

In 1940, Golding dropped his current teaching job to join th Royal Navy. He spent six years there. While in the Navy, he developed a lifelong romance with sailing and the sea.

William Golding finally published his book after being rejected 21 times. It was called "Lord of the Flies." This book set the tone for Williams future work, which continued to examine man's internal struggle.
