Wiliam Golding was born in Cornwall, England. His parents are Mildred and Alec Golding. His mother kept the house and his father was a teacher.

He was afloat for 6 years. He participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, commanding a landing ship that fired salvoes of rockets onto the beaches.

'Lord of the Flies' was his first and most famous book. It is about a group of boys who try to govern themselves on an island.

In 1935 he started teaching English and philosophy in Salisbury. He left temporarily to serve in the navy.

He was awarded it "for his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today". He also won several other awards for his work.

Golding died of heart failure at age 83. He was buried in the parish churchyard of Bowerchalke, Wiltshire.
