During World War II, Golding fought battleships at the sinking of the Bismarck, and also fended off submarines and planes. Lieutenant Golding was even placed in command of a rocket-launching craft. HE spent 6 years doing this work. HE also even met his wife there.

After Golding served his time in the Royal Navy he went back to his profession, teaching.
