William Golding was born on September 19, 1911 in Cornwall, England. He was born to his mother, Mildred, a British suffragette and his father, Alec, a school teacher.

Golding attended College at Brasenose in Oxford University. He studied science for his first two years, but switched to English Literature during his third year.

After studying science and English, and even writing a book. William graduates college with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in education.

After Golding graduated college, he worked as a writer, actor, and producer. He worked at a small theater in London until 1939 until he got a teaching job.

After working in London for awhile, Golding took a teaching position to teach English and philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury. Golding's experiences at this job is said to have inspired him to write his novel "Lord of the Flies".

In 1939, Golding gets married to Ann Brookfield. He and Ann have two kids together, David and Judith.

In 1940, Golding took a temporary break from teaching. During his break he joined the Royal Navy and fought in World War II.

After being rejected 21 times by publishers, 'Lord of the Flies' finally becomes Goldings first published novel in 1954.

After teaching since 1939, with an exception of 5 years in the navy. Golding finally decides to leave his teaching position to write full time.
