He was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. He was raised in the 14th century next to a graveyard. He had one brother, Joseph Golding.

2 decades after he wrote Lord of the Flies, Golding was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize for Literature when he was 73.

In 1990, a newer version of Lord of the Flies was released to the public. This encouraged the newer generation to read the original copy of the book.
