William was born and in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall England and grew up there. His mother gave birth to him at his grandmothers home were he spent many holidays as a child. His father, Alec Golding, was a science master at Malborough Grammar School. Mildred, his mother was a stay at home mom who also campaigned for women's suffrage.

At the age of 12 William decided to attempt his first novel and when he failed he became a bully as an outlet.

William attended Brasenose College at Oxford and studied science for his firt 2 years. After that he switched to literature to follow his true passion

In 1934 he published his first work, a book of poetry entitled "Poems". This book was published by Macmillan & Co. Also his friend Adam Bittleston helped him out.

Golding graduated from Oxford with a Bachelor in Arts in English with second class honours.

In 1940 William joined the Royal Navy and fought onboard a destroyer ship. For a short time he was also involved in helping to sink the German battle ship Bismark.

In 1954 Willam published his first novel after a mere 21 rejections. The novel "Lord of the Flies" is still talked about today and is often considered his most acclaimed book.

In 1983 William received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Then I'm 1988 he was knighted by England's Queen Elizabeth II.

In Perranarworthal, Cornwall on June 19, 1993 William died of a heart attack. He was in the company of his wife and 2 children. After his death the manuscript for his novel "The Dovble Tounge" was published
