William Golding

  • Birth

    William was born on September 19, 1911, in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. His mom was a activist and his dad was a schoolmaster. Also when he was young he attempted to write a book but it didn't publish successfully
  • Early Life and Education

    William attended at a grammar school, and aster primary school, he attend Brasenose College at Oxford University. Where he studied English literature. At this time he also successfully published a book of poems he had been working on
  • Pursuit of his career

    After graduation he worked in settlement houses and the theater for a time, in 1935 Golding took a position teaching English and philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth’s School in Salisbury. And while working he was inspired to write his book "Lord of the Flies."
  • Near end of his life

    William spend the last years of his life with his wife, Ann Brookfield. Where he lived in Falmouth, Cornwall, where he continued to write. Him and his wife married in 1939 where they had two children, who were David and Judith
  • Royal Navy

    William left his job temporarily and he joined the Royal Navy and fight in World War II. Where he spent six years on boat, except for a seven month time frame where he assisted Lord Cherwell at the Naval Research Establishment. After the war William used his war experiences to get material for his fiction writing. in 1945 after WW 2 William went back to teaching and writing.
  • Making and success of his novel

    After 21 rejections, William published his first and most acclaimed novel, Lord of the Flies. His book's manner is about a harsh side of human nature. Williams boo shows peoples struggle with the good and the evil. His novel has been widely regarded as a classic, worthy of in-depth analysis and discussion in classrooms around the world.
  • Better things to come

    William retired from teaching and William's book "Lord of the Flies" got a film adaptation made by Peter Brook. In 1983 William was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. And in 1988 he was knighted by England’s Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Death

    William Goldin died on June 19,1993, due to a heart attack. After his death his completed manuscript for "The Double Tongue" was published. Though he was a novelist he wrote poetry, plays, essays and short stories.
