He left teaching temporarily in 1940 to join the Royal Navy. Which led him to fighting in World War 2.

In 1954 he published his first novel, which was named "Lord of the Flies". This first novel had 21 rejections before it was published.

Following the publication of Lord of the Flies, Golding was granted membership in the Royal Society of Literature.
