Laurance Rockefeller (the grandson of John D. Rockefeller) builds the Dorado Beach Resort in Puerto Rico. The resort is the first Caribbean luxury resort.

RIta Moreno wins an Oscar for her role in West Side Story. She is the second Puerto Rican to win an Oscar. She later goes on to be the first Hispanic to win an Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and a Grammy.

Roberto Sanchez Vilella is elected as the second democratically elected Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Voters continue with their affirmation for Commonwealth, with 60% voting yes; 39% voting for Statehood; and 1% for the Independence of Puerto Rico.

United Statehooders Party is founded by Luis A. Ferré, which is a campaign for Puerto Rico to become the 51st state of the United States. It is also known as the New Progressive Party.

The Puerto Rican Nationalist group claims reponsibility to a bombing in Fraunces Tavern, New York. This bombing kills four people and injures 53 people. The police is able to tie 13 other bombings to it.
