    -Most immigrants came from Southern+Eastern Europe, especially Poland, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Greece+Russia.
    -Some push factors were oppression, poverty, war, religious/ethnic persecution.
    -Pull factors were freedom+economic opportunities.
    -"New immigrants" either stayed in New York or took trains to join their relatives in other parts of the country.

    -The telegraph allowed people to communicate across great distances.
    -The new technologies it led to was fax machines, cell phones, iPhone.
    -The general roue that these lines followed was next to the railroads because they would have easy access to work on them.

    -using fresh Irish immigrants for votes Tammany Hall gained power with polticians and the people
    -T-H would then help Irish immigrants get jobs, pay rent and Americanize them.
    -T-h offered votes for bribs and construction jobs in NY (like the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge)
    -T-H was connected to the Democratic Party
  • Homestead Act

    -The Homestead were several U.S. fed laws that gave a person ownership of land, typically called a "homestead".
    -At little or no cost, totaling 160 acres if settlers improved the land in 5 years they own it.
    -Most homesteading occured west (mainly the Gt. Plains, Ok, Nebraska).
    -Harsh climates with little water high temp. (100) and blizzards in the winter.
    -Farmers created sod houses and dug 300 ft. wells. Farmers also came with DRY FARMING (planting seeds deep to reach moisture).

    -Railroads and barbed were began to end the cattle drive era by closing off the ranges and making the transportation easier.

    -Settlers started having battles with native Americans because it moved natives into reservations.
    -Put rails on rich hunting grounds.
    -Easy to transport cattle and goods.

    -Hull house was a settlement house in the united states located in near west side Chicago.
    -Found by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889. They believed that immigrants should be able to learn and adjust to american life.
    -The mission was to provide social and educational oppertunities for working class immigrants. Hull house also offered free lectures on current issues and opperated clubs for children and adults.

    -From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States.
    -Mostly from Northern and Western Europe, passed through its doors, immigrants came from England, Ireland, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries.
    -The main reasons immigrants were excluded was if a doctor diagnosis contagious disease or legal reasons and nationality.
