    Melba is born on Pearl Harbor. Melba's mom says to her that when she was giving birth to Melba "there was a big uproar, with the announcement that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor" (Beals 1).

    Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas
    In the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas it became illegal to have seperate white and black schools. Melba's said her teacher "spoke breathlessly about Brown v. Board of Education" (Beals 12). Her teacher was very nervous and scared about it.

    Limit Intergration to Central High School
    Litlle Rock School board had adopted a plan to limit integration to Central High. Melba wanted to go there because she always passed it and wanted to see it in the inside. She said "I was certain it would take a miracle to intergrate Little Rock's schools" (Beals 19). She thought this would never happen and that it would take a mircale.

    People were knocking down the fences of segregation. Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white person and this lead "to the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott" (Beals 20).

    Schools Had to Integrate Immediately
    The NAACP filed suit in federal District Court to make the schools integrate immediately. Most people opposed it and the Governor anounced his refusal to support. " Reffering to a poll that said 85 percent of all Arkansas's people opposed intergration, Governor Orval Faubus announced his refusal to support the interegration of our state's schools" (Beals 20).

    The Governor wanted black and white people to be segregated in different school, he didn't wanted to have integration. So "President Faubus calls the national guard to keep school segregated" (Beals 30).

    Melba was going to Central High School for the first time, "Hundreds of Little Rock citizens are gathered in front of Central High School awaiting the arrival of the Negro children" (Beals 31).

    The President gave the governor a ten-day respite to sort out his response to the court order. "There would be a meeting at Eisenhower's vacation dpot in Rhode Island after that" (Beals 54).

    The President sent body guards to protect her. She knew "that the President didn't send those soldiers just to protect mr but to show support for an idea" (Beals 106).

    "FBI Director J.Edgar Hoover accused Governor Faubus of Arkansas of disseminatiing falsehoods by saying FBI agents held teenagers incommunicado for hours of questioning" (Beals 115).

    Minnijean is getting bullied by boys. "Minnijean was being hassled by those boys" (Beals 148).
  • Minnijean Suspended

    Minnijean Suspended
    Minnijean got suspended for pouring chili on a white boy. She was getting bullied by boys and she reacted "By dumping the chili over the white boy's head" (Beals 151).

    Minnijean and her parents met with the superintendent. The Superintendent told Minnijean when she could go back to school. "She was allowed to return to school Monday" (Beals 158).
  • Minnijean Speaks

    Minnijean Speaks
    Minnijean explains in the article her side of the story and tells them why she had poured the chili on the boy's head. She just had pressure and kids would "throw rocks,..., and they would call you nigger" (Beals 163). They just pushed her to a point where she exploded and reacted to the situation.

    Minnijean was expelled. After a "fourty-minute hearing" (Beals 166) she was expelled. This was a defeat for her people.

    Ernie recieves his diploma and graduates. "Ernie became the first of our people to graduate from Central High School in all its forty-nine years" (Beals 215).
  • Award

    They went to Chicago to recieve the Robert S. Abbot Award. They recieved awards for "bravery and significant contributions to democracy" (Beals 217).
  • Grandma India's Death

    Grandma India's Death
    Lukemia had taken over Grandma India's body causing her to pass away. Melba said "my world fell apart" (Beals 219). Se was devistated by her grandma's death
