In June, France surrendered to Germany. In July, the Battle of Britain began. Italy invaded Egypt and Greece. Hungary and Romania joined the Axis Powers.
  • The Pearl Harbor Attack

    On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese warplanes attacked the home base of the American Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, drawing the United States into World War II. More than 2,300 Americans were killed.

    On this day, Adolf Hitler declares war on the United States, bringing America, which had been neutral, into the European conflict.

    June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot- hold in Normandy.
