    A march through the high desert terrain of White Sands Missile Range of Filipino and American troops after America's surrender on the island of Luzon to Japan during World War 2. They marched to prison camps through intense heat and faced horrible treatment from Japanese troops.

    Doolittle Raids
    16 American planes risked their lives in a dangerous mission to bomb the heart of Japan, Tokyo. They succeeded in this, but lost a lot of men in the process.
  • Battle of the Coral Sea

    Battle of the Coral Sea
    The Japanese were trying to invade Australia in hopes of getting more land, but the American tropps swooped in with the airforce and stopped the Japanese.
  • US Surrenders the Philippines

    The Americans took over the Philippines, but Japan struck at the with 3 different naval fleets. American troops destroyed Japan's first fleet, but Japan kept fighting and gotg America back with their 3rd naval fleet, causing the US to surrender the Philippines to Japan.
  • The Battle of Midway

    Now the Japaese had a focus on Midway, an island just North of Hawaii. Americsns again stopped the Japaese by breking their coe and learnng who their next target was.
  • Guadalcanal

    19,000 American troops stormed the Guadalcanal and forced Japan to flee. This marked Japan's first defeat on land, but not it's last. US troops continued to jump from island to island, slowly getting closer to Japan.
  • Battle of Leyte Gulf

    A battle between the US and Japanese in the Philippines. The US invaded the Philippines and the Japanese fought back with 3 naval fleets, causing the US to surrender.
  • Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima
    It was the most defended place on earth, defended by the Japanese. This island was critical to the US because it would help them get closer to Japan. The Allies were able to take over Iwo Jima, leaving on 200 Japanese soldiers to survive.
  • Okinawa

    US Marines invaded Okinawa and were immediately attacked by the Japanese. They sank 30 ships and damaged 300 more, and killed over 50,000 American soldiers. But the Japanese faced an even harsher defeat, losing over 100,000 soldiers in the Battle of Okinawa.
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    An American bomber dropped two atomic bombs in Japan, one in Hiroshima and one in Nagasaki. The bomb in Hiroshima killed 80,000 people, and the one in Nagasaki killed 40,000. Japan then surrendered in World War 2 over a radio address.
