    Hong Kong fell into the Hands of the Japanese. 20 000 allied soldiers were no match for the skilled Japanese. Dec 5 1941 was marked the Black Christmas. Every canadian was either killed or taken prisoner. Nearly 1700 Canadian prisoners of war faced brutal conditions and were later used as slave labour.

    175 000 canadians begun their attackt to drive the Germans back to Rhine River and out of the Netherlands.

    The fighting was slow and horrible. Nearly 23 000 Allied soldiers were killed , including more than 5200 Canadians.
    The Germans lost 90 000 of their men including 52 000 who were taken prisoner.
    On march 10, the Greman army withdrew to the east bank of the Rhine River, allowing the Canadians to continue north to liberate Holland.
  • Liberating the Netherlands. 1944- 1945

    The Canadians were given a separate task, it was to Liberate the Netherlands.
    An earlier Allied attempt to free Holland had failed and German troops had already destroyed the port cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam and flooded much of the countryside. Food and fuel supplies to the Dutch had been cut off and many were starving to death. The bitter winter of 1944-1945 made difficult conditions even worse.
