  • Russian: Sputnik gets sent into space.

    Russia sent the first earthly object into space. Sputnik was a radio that was only about as big as a football, and it sent beeps back from space.
  • Russia: First animal launched into space.

    Laika the dog was the first animal in space. She died in space because there was no possible way to bring her back. Still her contributions did lead to many discoveries about the weightlessness of space and that they could in fact survive in space.
  • American: Project Mercury

    It was America's first attempt at Human Spaceflight. They planned to put a human in orbit. John Glenn was the first American to go in orbit.
  • Russian: Yuri Gagarin

    Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet pilot and Cosmonaut, was sent into space and completed an orbit of Earth.
  • American: First American in Space.

    Alan B Shepard (1923-1998) was the second man and the first American in space in 1961
  • Russia: Dual-Pilot Flights

    Russia developed what the would soon try to with Vostok 3 and 4: Dual-Piloted Spaceflight. The Americans countered thie with project Gemini.
  • Russian: First man to walk in space.

    Aleksei Loenov, a Soviet/Russian cosmonaut, was the first man to walk in space aboard the Voskhod 2. HE had only 45 minutes of oxygen, and he walked for 12 minutes.
  • American: Project Gemini

    This was America's second attempt at Human Spaceflight. It was used to develop Extra-vehicular activity, or work done outside a shuttle, and docking in space.
  • American: Apollo 2-6

    Americans begin Space development with Apllo 2 and continue research and development until Apollo 6. These flights were essentially tests for more advanced spceflight.
  • American: Apollo 7.

    Apollo 7 was a confidence builder fo NASA, and it was the first three-manned flight.
  • American: Orbit the Moon

    Apollo 8 marked the first orbit of the moon for America. Essentially, they escaped the gravitational pull of one celestial body, and entered another's.
  • American: Apollo 9

    Apollo 9 was vital for the moon landing because it tested the lunar model.
  • American: First man on the moon.

    Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are the first men to walk on the moon. "A small step for (a) man, a giant leap for mankind."
  • American: Apollo 13

    They didn't make it to the moon. After a malfunction and explosion, the illfated Apollo 13 had to make an emergency landing back to Earth. But after all the malfunctions, the crew made it safely back to Earth on April 17th.
  • American: Apollo 17 returns from the moon.

    It was the final lunar landing mission. It set the record for longest lunar flight.
