Voting Rights in the United States

  • Constitution is ratified

    All of the white, land owning whites could vote
  • Religious qualifications dropped

    All religious requirements were no longer in effect
  • Property requirements dropped

    Property ownership was no longer needed as well as tax requiremnets. Almost all white males could vote.
  • 15th Amendment

    Giving the former male slaves the right to vote, while pretecting the voting rights of the adult males of any race
  • 19th Amendment

    grants women sufferage which is giving women the right to vote
  • 23rd Amendment

    Allows the Columbia District ( Federal) to have the right participate in presidential elections
  • 24th Amendment

    bans the rule to pay as a requirement in order to vote in Federal elections
  • Voting rights act of 1965

    Protects the rights of minority voters while eliminating the voting barriers like the literacy test. Expanded and renewed in 1970, 1975, 1985.
  • 26th Amendment

    Requires the minimum age to vote to be 18
