Voting Rights In the United States

  • 1789 - Constitutionis Ratified Only white male adult proerty - owners have the right to vote.

  • 1810 religious qualifications dropped - laste religious perequisite for voting is eliminated

  • 1850 - Prprety requirments dropped. Property ownership and tax requiremetns eliminated by 1850. Almostall adult white males could vote.

  • 15th amdenment is passed. It gives frrmer slaves the right to vote and protects the voting rights of adult male citizenship of any race.

  • 1920- 19th amendment guarantees womans suffrage

  • 23rd amendment allows voters of the district of the public of Columbia to participate in presisdential elections

  • 24th Amdendment bans the poll tax as a requirement for voting in federal elections.

  • Viting Rights act of 1965 protects the rights of minority voters and eliminates voting barriers such as the literacy test. The Act is expanded and renewed in 1970, 1975, and 1982

  • 26th Amendment sets the minnimum voting age at 18
