    Shots were exchanged between the USS Maddox and North Vietnam (the Vietminh fired first). The U.S. had technically sided with South Vietnam, but were in the North's waters the day in question.

    50,000 U.S. troops battled the Vietcong (Southern Vietnamese who fought for the North). This was the first sustained U.S. assault (bombing campaign) on North Vietnamese territory.

    On the Buddhist Holiday of Tet, thousands of Vietcong troops attacked major cities in South Vietnam. It was a campaign of surprise attacks against military and civilian command/control centers in South Vietnam.
