As a political statement Buddhist Monks set themselves on fire. They did this as a way to protest against the war, policies, and South Vietnam.

South Vietnamese General Duong Van Minh overthrows the Diem regime and kills Diem with encouragement from the United States.

This occured because Tet is the beginning of the Chinese New Year. North Vietnam used this holiday as an attack.
This event marks the turning point of the war, US officials were losing hope that they could win. -
Troops in Vietnam are over 543,000. President Nixon has a plan to train and transition South Vietnamese troops to American troops.

Final combat soldier leaves Vietnam, but some Marines and military advisors remain.
Out of the Americans that served 60,000 are dead, 1,000 are missing in action, and 150,000 are wounded. Over 3 million American soldiers have served. -
The war in Vietnam ends. Saigon is taken by the North Vietnamese.
