    Driving out China

    China wanted to control Vietnam for years until Vietnam finally won limited independence for China. When China tried to reasert all control, Vitenam used guerrilla warfare tactics to defeat China. By 1428 Vietnam won complete independence.
  • Vietnma Invaded Again

    The rench invaded Vietnam trying to overtake the country. Eventually in 1883 French won complete control and then later combined Vietnam with Loas and Combodia to make the French IndoChina.
  • Threat from Japan

    By 1940 the Japanese army occupied all of IndoChina and threatened to move into the rest of Southeast Asia.
  • Locked in Battle

    By 1946 the French and Vietnamese were once agin inbatle with each other. Ho Chi Minh asked for US assistance but the US decided to join France's side.
  • Bloody Ground War

    United States was caught up in a bloody ground war, trying to turn back communist North Korea's invasion of South Korea.
  • France Surrenders

    The French becoe surrounded by 50,000 Vietminh troops. Eisenhower was relunctant to join into another Asian war. On May 7, 1954 France surrendered to Vietnam
  • International Conference

    just a single day after France surrendered there was a international conference in Geneva Switzerland to discuss the conflicts in Indochina.
  • Reunifying a Country

    Fearing that the communists would influence Vietnam too mucha a Cease-fire was ordered. France regainedcontrol and general elections to reunify the country were scheduled for July 1956.
  • Military Assistance

    By 1959 northern military assistnace began flowing south to the Vietminh.
  • Vietnam Attacks

    Kennedy rose the amount of military advisor in Vietnam to 16,000. Kennedy engagedin direct combat after multiple Vietnamese attack.s
  • Murder of Diem and his Brother

    Vietnames plotters murdered Diem and his brother. This upset U.S. advisors who prepared to fly Diem out of the country.
  • Tonkin Guld Resolution

    The president needed congression backing in order to create a stronger force against the communists. This Resolution passed by congress let the President create a stronger US force agaisnt Vietnam.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    President Johnson used this air bombing attack to eliminate military targets in the North.
  • Ground War

    The US bombing in the north caused Vietcong to move sout hwith supplies. In turn the US launched a ground attack on these moving Vietcong.
  • Antiwar Demonstration

    A march in Washington D.C. including over 20,000 people marhcing to th capitol to deliver a petition to Congress to immediately end the war.
  • Tet, the Vietnamese New Year

    Vietcong guerillas attacked cities, villages and US strongholds . They even overtake the US embassy courtyard at one point.
  • Flase Removal

    Nixon removed troops from Vietnam but shortly after he secretly had combodia bombed and then later said it was a use of friendly defense.
  • Random Shootings

    National Guard troops shot randoly into agroup of students at Kent State University. They killed 4 students and injured 9. There reason was that some students set fire to a ROTC campus building.
  • Repeal

    Congress Repealed the Tonkin Guld Resolution. Nixon didn't think this changed his authority to keep fighting the war. congress planned to cut off funding once US troops were withdrawn.
  • Pentagon Papers

    When these papers were released it revealed to the public that the government had often misled the public about the war.
  • Major Invasion

    Hoping to show the weakness in Nixon's strategies the Norht drove deep into South Vietnam and took over alot of land despite Nixon bombing on North Vietnam.
  • Cease-fire

    Negotiators in Paris called a cease-fire and the US withdrew troops from South Vietnam and offered to help rebuild.
  • The Collapse

    Just 2 years after the US witdrew the South Vietnam military government collapsed allowing North Vietnam to overrun the northern part of South Vietnam.
  • The Surrender

    South Vietname surrendered unconditionally as the Northern Vietnam troops stromed the US Embassy. THe United states was finally down with the war as it moved into Loas and Combodia. The Domino Theory which was predicted for Southeast Asia never occured.
