    During the year of 1954, the Vietnam War had offically begun between, North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was a communist nation, while South Vietnam fought against the communist pressure.
  • South Vietnam Seperates from the North

    South Vietnam Seperates from the North
    South Vietnam seperates itself from the North and becomes the Republic of Vietnam. Ngo Dinh Diem becomes president of the South.
  • National Liberation Front

    National Liberation Front
    The National Liberation Front in 1960 emerges in South Vietnam. The NLF was a group of fighters who lived in South Vietnam but sided with the North. They used guerilla warfare, and regular army tactics.
  • Ngo Dinh Diem Dies

    Ngo Dinh Diem Dies
    During a coup in 1963, the South Vietnam president, Ngo Dinh Diem dies by execution.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    On August 2nd, and 4th, North Vietnam attacked two U.S. destroyers in international water. This led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This resolution was passed by congress on August 7th, 1964.

    The United States began a series of ariel bombings onto North Vietnam. The series of bombing later became known as Operation Rolling Thunder.

    The communist leader of the North, Ho Chi Minh dies at 79 years old. He died from poor health. When the North took control of the South Vietnamese capital, they renamed it in his honor.
  • The North Crosses the DMZ

    The North Crosses the DMZ
    North Vietnam crossed the demilitarized zone at the 17th parallel. This attack becomes known as the Easter Offensive.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    Paris Peace Accords
    The Paris Peace Accords are signed allowing for a cease fire. The treaty stated that the U.S. had sixty days to remove all bases, troops, and advisors. This is the treaty that officially ended the United States involvment in the Vietnam War.

    The last Unites States troops leave Vietnam in 1973. This ends our involvement in the war.
