    Dien Bien Phu
    The French attempt to take Indochina from the Viet Minh. The Chinese and USSR aided the Viet Minh Forces and after 170 days of confrontation the French Surrendered. This is the day the French surrendered and this eventually led to the Geneva Accords.
  • Geneva Accords

    Geneva Accords
    The Geneva Accords ultimately made a cease-fire between the French and VietMinh and than the exit of the French of Vietnam. It also created a new temporary boundary between both the North and the South. They are split at a 17th parallel and two leaders are formed. Ho Chi Minh becomes leader of the North and Ngo Dinh Diem was made leader of the South

    Now that there is a New President, Ngo Dinh Diem, South Vietnam declares themselves the Republic of Vietnam

    Ngo Dinh Diem Assasinated
    A Coup Attack on Diem's Palace renders both him and his brother dead. This Coup was supported by the U.S.A and C.I.A because the Americans feared a communist victory
  • The Gulf of Tonkin Incident

    The Gulf of Tonkin Incident
    There were reports that the North Vietnamese forces attacked two U.S destroyers that were sitting in the Gulf of Tonkin. They later figured out that it was a glitch in the sonar system but the U.S still used this as a reason to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.

    This was the resolution as a result of the supposed Sea Battle that took place between the two U.S destroyers and North Vietnamese navy. This bill intiailly gave President Lyndon B. Johnson w/o authorization to use military force in S/E Asia. This resolution was used to quickly mobilize more troops

    Operation Rolling Thunder begins
    Air raids on North Vietnam begin and last for three years, This operation was ordered by President Lyndon B. Johnson
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    The North organzations such as the VietCong rallied up a final attack on the South Vietnamese and Allies stunning their enemies leading to more than 3,000 American casulties. This was essentially the turning point of the Vietnam War which led to American and South Vietnamese evacuations led by President Nixon and Lyndon B Johnson. The U,S were quite shocked with this attack and didn't expect the North to be so strong

    US Troops went on a mass killing spree in a village. Villagers like women, older men, and children were all killed and 12 U.S officers were charged with murder

    The capitol of South Vietnam, Saigon was captured by the peoples army of Vietnam and the National Liberation Front.
