    The purpose of the Geneva Conference was to find a way to reunite Korea. However, the main focus of the Geneva Conference was to find a way to make peace in Indo-China, but mainly in Vietnam.
  • Americans Arrive in South Vietnam

    Americans Arrive in South Vietnam
    President John F. Kennedy gives an order that we need to give help to South Vietnam in the War. He suggests that we send over about 3000 support soldiers. The first American troops arrive in Vietnam.
  • Operation Chopper

    Operation Chopper
    This was America's first real offensive in Vietnam. We attacked with about 1000 American aircraft. They attack a Vietcong base that is near the capital Saigon.
  • Tonkin Resolution

    Tonkin Resolution
    There were reported North Vietnamese torpedo boats that attacked American ships. These ships were just trying to report some intelligence information back to South Vietnam. After this, Congress passed the Tonkin Resolution. This allowed the US to repel any attack that is a threat.

    American Ship Maddox retaliates
    When the US ship, USS Maddox reports to have been attacked, there is no report on any attack on the ship. A few hours after the attack on this ship, the President orders an attack on North Vietnam bases. The US destroys them and destroys a large oil area with the bases.

    President Johnson orders Operation Rolling Thunder in February. However, there was several delays that pushed the date back to March 2nd. This Operation was to be a long lasting bombing on North Vietnam that would make them lose the will to continue fighting.

    America chooses to take on a month long amount of bombing runs on Vietnam. They want to hit many transport systems, such as road and railways, as well as supply depots.

    Battle of Chu Lai
    A North Vietnam soldier reveals that an attack on Chu Lai is going to happen. America goes through with Operation Starlite. This creates the largest battle so far in the war. It gives America a large victory in the war.
  • Operation Crimp

    The US plans to take the main North Vietnam base that in the Saigon area of South Vietnam. Even with the large amount of soldiers that are deployed, the US is not able to find the North Vietnam Headquarters in South Vietnam. After the large deloyment, the area is repeatedly patrolled.

    This American Operation is one of America's largest air deployments ever in the world. The goal is to find and destroy all possible North Vietnam bases in South Vietnam. Even though America did not find any large battes, we did find a large amount of supply warehouses.

    North Vietnam attacks with a surprise and attack more than 100 cities in South Vietnam. North Vietnam had more losses that America even though it created the many civilian deaths. This attacks largest blow to America was the affect it had in lowering public opinion on the war.

    VideoThe massive North Vietnamese attack on Khe Sanh was a surprise attack. Rounds pound into the city repeatedly. The US eventually ends up with having Khe Sanh in their control after 77 days.

    Soon after Nixon was elected to President, he said he would try to withdraw troops for Vietnam. He introduced this term to support the South Vietnamization in order to withdraw troops. He wanted South Vietnam to fight the war more for themselves in order to withdraw troops.

    The National Guard shot into a crowd of people at Kent State. The event ende with 4 people dead and 9 people injured. This caused many colleges to close because the student went on stikes.
  • Operation Lam Son

    Operation Lam Son
    The South Vietnamese soldier were going on an attack to a North Vietnam Base. However, the base was ready and South Vietnam went into a trap. A large portion of the vehicles South Vietnam had were destroyed in the battle.
  • 26th Amendment

    26th Amendment
    This gave people who were able to fight for their country, the right to vote for who is sending them into life threatening situations. It gave people ages 18 and above, the right to vote.

    The President ordered another bombing run on North Vietnam. These bombing runs went on for twelve days, and were meant to hit supply depots and enemy airfields. It ended with having less than 100 American deaths with over 1300 North Vietnam dead.
  • US Withdraw Troops

    The US signed a document that stated that they would bring all troops back home including POW (Prisoners of War). There was also a signature stating that there would be a ceasefire between the US and North Vietnam.

    This act created some more limits that would lower the amout of exective power. It required the president to work with Congress on when to withdraw troops from a militarized zone. They have to withdraw troops in 60 to 90 unless Congress orders immediate evacuation.

    South Vietnam Surrender
    Once the last US troops have left the country, North Vietnam moves into Saigon. Soon afterward, the city falls, and the country is reunited under Communist Rule. This is the end of the long Vietnam War.
