    Vanga was born in Strumica, then in the Ottoman Empire (present-day Republic of Macedonia).Her real name was Vangelia Pandeva Dimitrova .She was a premature baby who suffered from health complications. In accordance with local tradition, the baby was not given a name until it was deemed likely to survive

    At the age of 12, the young girl known as Vangelia was lifted up by a wind storm and thrown to the ground. People found her with her eyes filled with sand and dirt and she soon became blind. Soon after this, she began to exhibit an ability at foresight, at seeing into the future. She would eventually be called Baba Vanga. While “Baba” is often translated as “grandmother” or “old woman,” there are many who feel that it really means “wise woman.”

    On 10 May 1942 Vanga married Dimitar Gushterov, a man from a village near Petrich, who had come asking for the killers of his brother, but had to promise her not to seek revenge. Shortly before marriage, Dimitar and Vanga moved to Petrich, where she soon became well-known. Dimitar was later conscripted in the Bulgarian Army and had to spend some time in then Bulgaria annexed Northern Greece

    Fulfilling Vanga's last will and testament, her Petrich house was turned into a museum, which opened its doors for visitors on 5 May 2008.The opening of the house to visitors drew hundreds of visitors, from Bulgaria, Russia and Greece.Local media reported that as people entered the house after its reopening, some prayed, others genuflected and some cried.Admission to the house is free of charge. The house is largely as it was at the time that Vanga died.
